Events and activities in Leeds during Dementia Action Week 20 – 26th May

The Dementia Friendly Leeds team have produced a Dementia Action Week Booklet 2019 containing a listing of events and activities taking place in Leeds during Dementia Action Week.

Dementia Action Week (20 – 26 May 2019) is all about taking action to improve the lives of people living with dementia. Almost all of us know someone affected by dementia, but too many people living with dementia report feeling cut off from their community, losing their friendships and facing dementia alone. Simple actions from us all can create supportive communities – where people living with the condition can continue to socialise with others, get out of their homes and into the community to take part in local activities for as long as possible.

During Dementia Action Week there are lots of activities happening in Leeds including a play ‘The Last Memory’ inspired by a real life situation by Alan Stockdill and Talking Stock Productions and an immersive experience evoking the senses of the summer with relaxing beach surroundings by The Living Project. There are also lots of social cafes, singing groups and informative events happening across the city.

On Friday 24th May we will be hosting an event to welcome new members to the Up and Go DEEP group. DEEP (Dementia Engagement and Empowerment Project) is a national network of groups providing a platform for people living with dementia to make a difference in their communities. The Up and Go DEEP group is for people with a diagnosis of dementia in Leeds – it is supported by professionals from Leeds Playhouse, Leeds City Council’s Peer Support Service, and Dementia Friendly Leeds. We are inviting newcomers to join us during Dementia Action Week for an informal meeting to find out more and explore getting involved – please get in touch if you would like to come along.

If you’re involved in an organisation which is planning an event during Dementia Action Week please forward details to us, as the listing is online we can keep updating it. If possible please help promote this :

  • Print out and display the poster
  • Print out the booklet and make it available to people who may not use the internet.
  • For older people who are not online, we can send out a copy in the post, phone us on 0113 244 1697 to request a copy of the booklet.

Many of the community groups and organisations who are offering events and activities during Dementia Action Week are part of a network known as the Leeds Dementia Action Alliance, if you’re involved in an organisation and would like to join the alliance and contribute to making Leeds a better place for people living with Dementia, you can sign up online or get in touch for more information.
