Research Study: Home temperature, indoor air quality, and the comfort of older people

What is this research project about?

This project is about how people aged 65 and over feel and adapt to different temperatures in their homes.

What is the main aim of the research project?

To find out how windows, doors, blinds, curtains and other features help people feel more comfortable when it’s too hot or too cold indoors and how this affects the air quality.

Research participant criteria

  • Age: 65 or older
  • Living situation: Independently, without requiring extra care or support (able to complete paper or electronic forms on their own)
  • Home presence: Spending most of the two-week study period at home (to provide self-reported feedback on their home environment)

What’s involved?

  1. A Main Survey
  2. A 2-week diary study and environmental monitoring (temperature, humidity, CO₂ levels, and air quality checks, plus brief comfort surveys);
  3. An Interview (30–40 mins)

Participants will receive

  • £40 in shopping vouchers for completing the main survey, diary, monitoring, and interview
  • £20 in shopping vouchers for completing the main survey, monitoring, and interview
